Top Home Trend Predictions for 2016

FotorCreated

The year is in its infancy, but our go-to style and trend experts at Houzz and Pinterest already have their predictions out for the top home trends of 2016. And what better time than winter to tackle a few home projects before the warm, spring weather calls you to the outdoors. Here are a few trends to look for throughout the year.

Two-tone kitchen cabinets — Expect to see quite a few kitchens keeping their upper cabinets white or neutral and then going style-crazy with the lower cabinets. Look for darker tones, natural woods, or very eclectic prints and designs. Okay, so this first trend could admittedly go off the rails fairly quickly, but we’re keeping an open mind.

Statement mirror bathrooms — Give a little facelift to your bathrooms and powder rooms in the form of a stylish statement mirror. Go big and eclectic with ornately decorated vintage pieces or choose large and wood-framed mirrors for a more classic and natural theme.

Formal dining rooms — In years past, it seemed like people were moving away from a formal dining area in favor of making space for an office or rec room; that is, until this year. We’ve been longtime fans of creating spaces just for entertaining, and it looks like everyone else is catching on! Take your dinner parties to the next level and create a dedicated space to entertain in the form of a formal dining room. A long, 10-foot table is just the right display for your famous roasted rack of lamb.

Niche appliances — And since you’ll be doing all that entertaining, you’ll need some of those luxury tools to go with your culinary show. Warming drawers help you keep dinner on time and ready for guests. And induction cooktops offer precise cooking while being safer for homes with young children. Go for a full upgrade with our Kenmore PRO® kitchen suite, with appliances designed to help you flambé and fricassee with the best of them.

Fabric wall art — This is a major step-up from those screen-printed sheets you may have hung on your wall in college. We like the look of stretched fabric over canvas pieces, but most of all we love the new woven wall decor trend. Why not create a beautiful DIY crocheted statement piece with your favorite colors or consider making a wall art gift for friends and family?

Mixed materials in the kitchen — Revisiting the more eclectic vibe in the kitchen from earlier, these new trends are aiming to make your kitchen more lively than the combination of classic white cabinets and granite countertops. Consider mixing several modern materials, finishes and colors. Think stainless steel with butcher-block counters, a more natural stone backsplash, or black iron handles and racks.

Tech-free living rooms — People are looking to get away from their tech-heavy lives throughout the day and want a space that’s more zen-like. We like the idea of taking a “tech-break” to create a calming atmosphere where we can read, spend quality time with family and friends, or just have a place to de-stress after a hectic day. You can even add a humidifier or dehumidifier to create your perfectly cozy room. This could be the year we keep our phones on silent — or even off — more often. The sound of silence sounds pretty inviting, doesn’t it?

Black, white and neutral shades — While we’re seeing big pops of color in the kitchen, using black, white and neutral colors throughout the rest of your home will really make those bolder design choices stand out. Feel free to pull through small, bright pieces to accent these muted colors in other rooms. And be on the lookout for a huge emphasis on grays of all varieties.

Graphic throw pillows — If you’re looking for a pop of color or a statement design that isn’t quite so permanent, bright and loud graphic pillows are just the new decoration piece your space needs. Be as bold as you want to be with this simple change.

Green spaces — The greener the better, we always say. Don’t be afraid to incorporate plants in every room of your home, especially when they boast so many benefits to your mood and even the air you breathe! Find out what plants are best for your home with our helpful guide.
